 The Song

Overview:

Modern record cover redesign based on a classic, Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor. Special attention to common relationships between sound, repetition, and mood that are found within the arrangement.  


Audience:

Listeners who are familiar with the song or who have heard it referenced in movies such as Phantom of the Opera.

Design Approach:

Capture the composition's dramatics through imagery and embody the classic appeal through color and texture. Display the main concepts of the music proteus such as sorrow, mystery, anticipation, and repetition.

Process

  • Listened to the song in full and wrote my initial thoughts and emotions.
  • Researched the history behind the song and common themes in media that incorporated the song. In content that was influenced by the song, I evaluated how it was used to further the intended message.
  • Went out and about to take photos that reminded me of the song throughout the week.
  • Collected the images and created a mood board to pinpoint the overall color themes.
  • Narrowed down the colors, images, and fonts that related to the song the most.
  • Experimented with color in Photoshop and type placement in InDesign.
  • Mocked up the edited images on a record and sleeve in Photoshop.
